McDonnell was awarded an Academy Award nomination for her part in Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves and she is also well-known for her performance as president Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica, the President's wife on Independence Day and for her prominent role in Donnie Darko, as the main persona's mother.
